My A&P was quite knowledgeable about Ercoupes. We always pulled the wings
on my 415C because he said "it was quick, easy, and gave great access".

If you cut holes be very very careful. Nick a spar cap and your center section is toast.

Wow that looks pretty bad. We just recovered the wings las winter so I know they are in good shape. I looked into the center section while the wings were off and they looked OK but next year an IA will have to sprinkle holy water on it. I am leaning towards installing the inspection ports bur have not yet decided which way to go.

Don't limit your inspection to just the center section spar. I recently did a annual on a F-1 and found exfoliation corrosion of the left wing upper spar cap. It would have been very hard to see without pulling the wing.

There are three methods: inspection holes; wings off; and borescope. Mechanics have usd the borescope 5 times on my plane. They send the scope up the gap between the wing and the center section. I think once we did the wings off method. Never did holes.

I used the inspection ports. I have had two IA's inspect the plane, they just glance up through the hole with a mirror and look for corrosion and when seeing none, they move on. They didn't use any scopes.
